NOTICE OF DINNER MEETING – WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 16, 2019
Your Manitoba ACI Chapter presents:
Precast Concrete for Bridge Infrastructure
Presenter: Hugues M. Vogel, Ph.D., P.Eng.
Overview of Presentation:
Stantec has been involved with the design of precast concrete components for several bridges in Manitoba. The first major precast project undertaken by Stantec included the rehabilitation of a bridge in the town of Morris on Provincial Trunk Highway 23 where the deck was replaced with full width, full depth precast panels. This project was the first of its kind in the Province using existing standards for precast concrete components which were thoroughly reviewed and adapted to suit construction criteria. The experience lead to the implementation of precast concrete deck panels for other bridges in Rural Municipalities across Manitoba, and eventually to the design of a remote bridge for the Province at Eden Lake where all concrete components were precast and assembled on site. The presentation will focus on lessons learned during these projects and present a review of details considered to achieve feasibility and constructability.
Bio for Presenter:
Hugues Vogel is a graduate from the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Manitoba, where he has also completed his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering. He is currently a structural engineer with Stantec Consulting Ltd. He has worked on projects that involve the design of precast prestressed concrete deck panels for steel girder bridges. He has also worked on projects involving the use of semi-integral and integral abutments as well as precast reinforced concrete substructure units for remote bridge sites. During his time with Stantec, Hugues has performed the rehabilitation design of existing structures, which include the use of Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) for strengthening. He has been involved with the design of structural health monitoring systems for the assessment of long- and short- term bridge performance of several bridges in Manitoba with Stantec, which stems from his previous work with SIMTReC. He has also developed his skills as a communicator through his teaching work in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba.
