Site Tour & Presentation of the Empress St. Project – Empress Overpass Rehabilitation, Roadworks & Accessibility Ramps and 2019 Annual General Meeting
Overview of Annual General Meeting (AGM):
The ACI Manitoba Chapter will be holding its AGM and the Board of Direction will provide their Reports for the 2018/2019 year, including the President, Treasurer, Membership, Certification, and Student Chapters. The Board of Direction will also initiate a vote on the adoption of any new By-Laws and the election of Officers.
Following the AGM, we will move into the Dinner Presentation.
Overview of Tour & Dinner Presentation:
The City of Winnipeg tendered the Empress St. Project in September 2018 after Empress St. was voted Manitoba’s Worst Road in 2018 and finishing 2nd in 2017 (CAA’s annual poll). The Design Consultant and Contract Administrator for the project is Morrison Hershfield. The project contract was awarded to Gateway Construction & Engineering Ltd in November 2018, with Borland Construction Inc receiving the sub-contract for the Roadworks. Construction started over the winter with construction on the North pedestrian ramp, Omand’s Creek stabilization works and the Empress St. and St. Matthews retaining wall, along with some of the underground works along St. Empress. As of May 2019, the Overpass Rehabilitation and Empress St. Roadworks portions of the contract have begun and are in high gear.
Site Tour – The site tour will involve a walking tour of the south end of the construction site, which includes:
- The rehabilitation and re-alignment of the Empress St. Overpass superstructure
- The rehabilitation of the Empress St. Overpass substructure piers
- The realignment and construction of the St. John Ambulance Way & Empress St. East from Portage Ave. to Eastway
- The construction of new pedestrian access ramps on the South and North sides of Portage Ave.
- Please Note: PPE is required for this tour (steel toed boots, hard hat, high visibility vest, and protective glasses).
Dinner Presentation – The dinner presentation will highlight the background and scope of the project, some of the particularly challenging aspects of this project, and construction progress to date.
